After You’d Gone

Mister recommended

We get out of the hole

We called him Mister

Because he missed her

When he went for her

Buddy

Said we ought to stay

He looked like Buddy Holly

And he always reeked

Of fireworks

We all built up

A kind of trust

And I was sure

That we could count on

Bill

His name was Bill

And so we called him by his name

Bill said

‘All’s good, I’ll look out for guards nearby’

And came back chewing gum with the patrol

Who beat us up and down

And dragged us by the hair

Bill sat atop the jeep

Legs dangling

Watching us

Bound

And under guard

We marched behind

He grinned

And, chewing gum,

Spoke English to the soldiers.

Mister went a little mad

On the seventh day

Of walking

Staring at That ghastly mug

That awful grin

He shrieked

We had eaten only

Half a loaf of bread

And drank some water

And thin soup

In seven days

He struck out

With both his legs

And knocked down

The nearest guard

And fell atop him

Biting

Kicking

All our hands were tied.

Bill jumped down

And spat on Mister

Mister, he rolled back

And shrieked again

And screamed out curses

He blasphemed

As Bill picked up a rock

And smiled a touch

As he brought it down

So many times

Until Mister had no face

No head

Just blood

And mush

And shit

And mud

And Bill just smiled

So calmly

When we walked off

Buddy started crying

He didn’t stop

And on the ninth day

He was shot

So now I’m watching Bill

And walking, on my own

And he keeps eye contact

All the time.

He’s chewing gum

And smiling

And he never looks away.

About dcduell

Failed musician. Trying to write for TV. Never sure quite where I'm headed. Serial un-funnyman. I used to do a lot of writing. Sometimes I still do. So I decided to put it on the internet. I'm on Facebook and Twitter. Pretty active on the former, not so much on the latter. Holler at me.
